“All right, everyone. I have a little surprise for you,” Mrs. Reader announced. “As I’m sure you all know, today is test day. But we are going to do the test a little differently. Instead of the usual written test, this time we are going to do an oral test. The test will be in the form of a discussion in which you will all take turns answering questions about the book. And we are going to video tape the discussion and show it at open house so your parents will get to see you all in action.”

Once again open house was taking over the school and making the teachers obsessed with finding creative ways to torture us, in order to entertain our parents. But I’d much rather be filmed than have to do another art project, so I was happy.

Just then, Phil Maker entered the class, video camera in hand. Phil is a fellow student who is set on becoming a famous Hollywood movie director before the age of 25. And I would say he is well on his way. Phil already has 17 homemade movies posted on YouTube and has volunteered as the school’s multimedia aide, which means he gets to miss class to do things like set up overhead projectors and film campus events. And it seemed that today our class was the event to be filmed.

Mrs. Reader opened her notebook. Phil nodded to confirm he was ready for action.

“Who can tell me about one of the main characters in the story?” Mrs. Reader asked.

A sea of hands went up. This was an easy question, and everyone jumped at it. Mrs. Reader called on Debbie.

But because this was a show for the parents and not just a simple question, Debbie had to stand up to answer. Debbie was very poised and carried herself well. She turned towards the camera and began to speak in a very cheery voice. “One of the main characters in the book was Charlotte,” she said and then paused to see if there was a follow-up question.

“Why do you think she was a main character?” Mrs. Reader asked. “She was a main character because she played a very important role in the story.”

“Can you tell us a little about Charlotte, Debbie?” Mrs. Reader asked as if she were a talk show host interviewing someone.

Debbie gave a very nice and to-the-point description of Charlotte.

“Very good. Thank you,” Mrs. Reader said. Debbie smiled and seemed to take a little bow as she sat back down in her chair.

Mrs. Reader continued to ask the class questions about the book, and the kids continued to perform for the video camera. You could tell that Mona had read the book because her hand went up for every question the teacher asked. And each time she did not get called on, she seemed to get a little more agitated.
